Chinese philosopher (fl.6th century BC), traditionally the author of the Dao De Jing (now known to have been compiled in the 3rd century BC) and founder of Daoism. Few facts are known about his life, but many legends survive, including storeys of his meeting in old age with his younger contemporary, Confucius.
