A type of semiconductor diode whose resistance varies with the voltage across it. A switching diode acts as an open switch when the voltage across it is low, but when the voltage rises to a certain value, its resistance decreases, and the diode conducts, acting as a closed switch.
Industry:Aviation
A type of shaft coupling that allows one shaft to drive the other, even if the two shafts are not in perfect alignment. A universal joint has a double hinge, with the axes of the two hinges at right angles to each other.
Industry:Aviation
A type of shaft used to couple an intermittent load, such as a generator to an engine. A quill shaft is a long, thin, hardened steel shaft with splines on each end. One end splines into the engine and the other end splines into the generator.
When an electrical load is suddenly applied to the generator, the quill shaft absorbs the load by twisting. This prevents the load being applied to the gear train of the engine as a sudden shock.
Industry:Aviation
A type of sheet metal repair that leaves a perfectly smooth surface. The reinforcement for the patch is mounted inside the structure, and the hole left where the damaged material was removed is filled with a filler plug. All rivets used for the repair are flush rivets.
Industry:Aviation
A type of sheet-metal forming tool used to make bends or folds along the edge of thin sheets of metal.
Industry:Aviation
A type of sheet-metal shop tool used to form large-radius curves in sheets of metal. Slip-roll formers have three hardened steel rollers mounted in a framework. One roller, the drive roller, is turned with a hand crank to pull the metal through the former. The clamp roller is adjustable up or down to clamp the sheet metal tightly against the drive roller.
The radius roller is adjustable so it can be pressed against the metal to bend it as the metal is pulled by the clamp roller and drive roller. This determines the radius of the bend.
Industry:Aviation
A type of shielded spark plug for use in an aircraft reciprocating engine for high-altitude operation. The ceramic insulator is recessed into the shell to allow a resilient grommet on the ignition harness lead to provide a watertight seal.
All-weather spark plugs, also called high-altitude spark plugs, are identified by their 3/4-20 shielding threads.
Industry:Aviation
A type of solder used for electrical and electronic work. Rosin-core solder is made in the form of a hollow metal wire, filled with rosin. When the solder melts, the rosin flows out to cover the metal and keep oxygen away from the surface, preventing the formation of oxides. Solder using synthetic rosin for the core is called resin-core solder.
Industry:Aviation
A type of spark plug used in aircraft engines that have problems with lead fouling the plugs. The electrodes are made of small-diameter platinum or iridium wire which leaves the firing end of the spark plug open so the gases inside the cylinder can scavenge the lead compounds before they solidify and foul the plug.
Industry:Aviation
A type of spark plug used in aircraft reciprocating engines. A massive-electrode spark plug has three or four nickel-alloy ground electrodes surrounding the insulated center electrode.
Massive-electrode spark plugs provide reliable ignition under normal operating conditions, but are replaced with fine-wire spark plugs in conditions where lead fouling is a problem.
