A type of capacitor made of two strips of metal foil for its plates and strips of waxed paper for its dielectric. Leads are attached to the metal foil, and the foil and waxed paper are formed into a tight, compact roll. The entire roll is then encapsulated in a plastic resin. A mark or line around one end of a paper capacitor identifies the lead attached to the outside layer of foil.
Industry:Aviation
A type of capacitor sealed in a metal container. The bathtub capacitor takes its name from its shape, which is similar to that of a bathtub.
Industry:Aviation
A type of carburetor or continuous-flow fuel injection system that uses the pressure drop across a servo bleed orifice (a metering jet) to control the amount of metered fuel allowed to flow to the cylinders. The servo system adjusts for changes in inlet fuel pressure so the pressure of the fuel sent to the cylinders is proportional only to the amount of air being drawn into the cylinders.
Industry:Aviation
A type of carburetor that mounts below the intake manifold of a reciprocating engine. All of the air flowing into the engine flows upward through the venturi.
Industry:Aviation
A type of carburetor used on reciprocating engines in which the fuel-metering force is produced by a float-operated needle valve that keeps the fuel level a constant distance below the edge of the discharge nozzle.
Industry:Aviation
A type of case hardening of steel done by heating the metal in a bath of molten cyanide salts. Carbon and nitrogen are absorbed from the salts into the surface of the steel. After the steel has been in the salts for the correct length of time, it is removed and quenched.
Industry:Aviation
A type of casting in which the object is cast or formed as a single piece. A large and complex object cast with one pouring of the molten metal into a mold is a monolithic casting. Monolithic castings have no seams or joints.
Industry:Aviation
A type of celestial navigation instrument. A bubble level in the octant provides an artificial horizon which allows the navigator to find the angle between a line tangent to the earth’s surface (the horizon) and a line to the stars being used for navigation.
Industry:Aviation
A type of chuck used on a drill motor or lathe that has all its jaws connected in such a way that they move together. When a drill or piece of work is placed in the chuck and the jaws tightened, all of the jaws move inward together and hold the drill or the work centered in the chuck.
Industry:Aviation
A type of circuit breaker that opens an electrical circuit when excessive current flows through it. Movable contacts are mounted on a bimetallic strip which is bent in such a way that they are forced tightly against fixed contacts in the circuit breaker housing. When more current than the circuit breaker is designed to carry flows through the bimetallic strip, the strip heats up and warps. When it warps, it snaps the contacts apart and opens the circuit.
