A rotating airfoil driven by a helicopter engine to produce vertical lift.
Industry:Aviation
A rotating airfoil driven by an airplane engine to produce thrust to pull or push an airplane through the air.
Industry:Aviation
A rotating airfoil installed on the disk of a compressor in a gas turbine engine. A compressor blade adds energy to the air as it moves through the engine.
Industry:Aviation
A rotating electric generator that produces alternating current. While all rotating generators produce AC, a DC generator uses some type of rectifier to change the AC into DC before it leaves the generator. Alternators used on light airplanes are three-phase AC generators with built-in three-phase, solid-state rectifiers to change the AC into DC before it leaves the alternator.
Industry:Aviation
A rotating electrical machine that changes, or converts, alternating current into direct current. A converter is usually a form of motor-generator, in which an AC motor drives a DC generator.
Industry:Aviation
A rotor system in which two rotors are mounted on the helicopter, on concentric shafts, in such a way that they turn in opposite directions — their torques cancel.
Industry:Aviation
A rough drawing made to illustrate a part or principle. Sketches are made according to regular mechanical drawing practices, but they are usually made without the use of drawing instruments, and they show only a minimum of detail.
Industry:Aviation
A rough measurement of the condition of a semiconductor diode. When the resistance of the diode is measured with an ohmmeter, it should have a high resistance one way (the junction is reverse-biased), but when the leads are reversed, the resistance should be low (the junction is forward-biased). A high front-to-back ratio normally indicates a good diode.
Industry:Aviation
A rough paint finish that is often applied to aircraft instrument panels. The surface of wrinkle-finish paint dries quickly, and the material below the surface shrinks as it dries. The shrinkage pulls the surface into a series of small wrinkles. A wrinkle finish does not show fingerprints or small scratches as much as a smooth finish.
Industry:Aviation
A round piece of wood used to make dowels for holding pieces of wood together.
